Education in Deepshikha aims to maximize the inherent potential of a special child. It focuses on mainstreaming to ensure that they also contribute to the society with the best of their efficiencies when provided equal opportunities. Deepshikha believes in the evolving capacity of each child and moves ahead with the belief that no child is un trainable.
Deepshikha commits to provide quality education, where in along with NIOS curriculum, a functional curriculum is also followed, based on the need of individual child. To provide best of the trainings, the ratio of teachers to the student has been kept as 8:1 and in order to give more and attention to children with multiple disabilities the ratio varies to 5:1.
It is like any preparatory school, preparing the child for mainstream/ special school.
Deepshikha has been running Special School for Children with Intellectual Disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Multiple Disabilities since last 36 years. School was started with only 9 students in a room that belonged to our late founder member, Mrs. Mira Budhia.
It was started with an aim to improve the lives of the children/students with disabilities by mainstreaming them. Initially the purpose was to make all the students independent in daily living activities(ADL). Work and activities were planned according their social, personal, recreational and academic goals, based on individual needs.
Later functional academics was incorporated and students were given concepts needed for daily living like time, money.
However it was observed that often persons with disabilities are not considered as a part of mainstream. The Inclusion scenario is rather bleak.
In order to break this chain of stigma, Deepshikha has made a commitment to improve the lives of the children/students with disabilities by understanding and introducing regular class curriculum and regular school model.
The special school begins at 10:00 AM in the morning with assembly and then energy of the students is boosted with physical exercise. Daily activities include basic living skills training to make a child completely independent in personal work. Emphasis is also on communication, social/peer interaction, all type of functional and at the end Academic training based on the child’s learning ability.
